With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Juniper, our Northern Saw-whet Owl ambassador.
Juniper was a beloved presence at the Iowa Raptor Project who left a lasting impression on volunteers and visitors alike.
Juniper succumbed from complications with egg-binding, a scenario where the bird's egg gets trapped inside its oviduct. This is considered a medical emergency; many egg bound birds perish within 24-48 hours. The egg lodged inside of Juniper was exceptionally large, and there was no chance she could pass it on her own. After multiple sedative procedures, tube feedings, medications, and fighting off an infection, Juniper passed away on May 20, 2026.
Juniper was hit by a car in 2020 and suffered injuries that made her non-releasable. She was brought to the Iowa Raptor Center in early 2025 in conjunction with the hiring of assistant director Katie Ibsen, who had been independently conducting wildlife education programs with Juniper in Wisconsin.
Juniper had never been on public display before and she quickly became a visitor favorite with her tiny and adorable presence.
The loss of Juniper has been felt throughout our center and by all of those who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was an integral part of IRP's popular fall owl programs, and she paved the way to starting our Saw-whet Owl Banding programs.
Juniper's presence will be incredibly missed, especially during these programs. She brought patience and quiet companionship to all who worked with her, and occasionally a diva attitude. She was truly our "rockstar bird" and could handle any diverse crowd. She helped us connect countless people to her species and the role they play in our environment. We will miss her adorable big eyes and the way she would bask in the sun with her wings drooped out. We could not have asked for a better raptor ambassador and role model. We are deeply grateful for the time we had with her, and for the memories she leaves behind for all of those who visited and loved her.
